SUNEL Powers Cyprus’ Largest Solar PV Project at Vassiliko Cement Quarry

A Vision for Sustainability

Located in the Amalas area, approximately 8 kilometers from the Vassiliko Cement Works facilities, the Vassiliko Solar Project is a landmark achievement in Cyprus’s renewable energy journey. As the largest solar PV project in the country to date, with an impressive capacity of 8 MWp, this installation supplies approximately 10% of our client’s electricity needs. Designed with advanced Upsolar UP-M350M panels and HUAWEI SUN2000-100KTL-H1 inverters, the project embodies SUNEL Group’s vision of shaping a world powered by innovation and driven by sustainability.

SUNEL Group is also nearing completion of Vassiliko 2, another 8 MWp project, further contributing to our client’s energy transition and cementing SUNEL’s role as a leader in renewable energy development.

Overcoming Challenges with Innovation and Teamwork

The Vassiliko Solar Project presented unique challenges associated with its scale and location. The project utilized a fixed tilt structure, selected for its durability and effectiveness in ensuring consistent energy output while minimizing maintenance. This design choice was instrumental in optimizing the performance of thousands of Upsolar UP-M350M panels, ensuring they captured maximum sunlight in the quarry environment.

The deployment of such a large number of solar panels required careful logistics, and integrating HUAWEI’s advanced inverters into the energy grid demanded precision engineering. SUNEL Group rose to the challenge with its expertise in large-scale solar installations. By employing cutting-edge technology, meticulous project planning, and collaborative teamwork, the project was completed on time in 2020. Its successful execution has set a new benchmark for renewable energy projects in Cyprus.

The Human Impact

At the heart of the Vassiliko Solar Project is a dedicated team of 150 engineers, technicians, and local workers who brought this vision to life. Their hard work ensured not only the technical success of the project but also significant benefits for the local economy through job creation and sustainable energy supply.

As the largest solar PV project in Cyprus, Vassiliko has inspired confidence in the potential of renewable energy to transform the country’s energy landscape. Its success has laid the foundation for similar ambitious projects.

Powering the Future

With a capacity of 8 MWp, the Vassiliko Solar Project contributes significantly to reducing carbon emissions and generating clean electricity at an unprecedented scale in Cyprus. By meeting around 10% of the client’s electricity needs, it aligns with SUNEL Group’s mission to empower change through sustainable innovation. As SUNEL Group nears the completion of Vassiliko 2, another 8 MWp installation, the company continues to lead the way in Cyprus’s energy transition.
